Friendship

Nowadays we call everyone our friend. That’s how easily we make friends. Whether they live in the same city or on the other side of the world, we just have a lot of friends.

There’s a saying: Out of sight out of mind.

A friend of mine said that this saying applied to me. That made me think. Am I really that bad and superficial? It is always easy to make friends, but maintaining them is a true art. In my case I have always been the one to maintain friendships but for how long was I to do this?

After a dozens of so called friendships, I suddenly decided I was only to invest in a few friends. These friends I do not see or speak to every day. I learn from them and I do not have to weigh and measure my words before saying it to them. They know me better than myself and are by my side.

True friendship to me is perhaps the only relation that survives the trials and tribulations of time and remains unconditional. A unique blend of affection, loyalty, love, respect, trust and loads of fun is perhaps what describes the true meaning of friendship. Similar interests, mutual respect and strong attachment with each other are what friends share between each other.

This is in my view the friend who’s worth mentioning. List all your friends and see how many true friends you actually have. I bet in your entire list, consisting of at least 100 contacts, only 3 or 4 will come up. Don’t see these words as a complaint of a pessimist or words of someone who sees the world black and white. It is not wrong to have many people around you but it is important that you are aware of the people around you. And if you come across your friends, cherish them.

OMG...this is so true i found out after high school who my true friends are and it was just 2...but 1 never bothers to txt back as much anymore, i would rather have 1 good friend than lots of fake friends...too many friends is a hassle...a lot of arguments and gossiping...its ashame i have experienced that more in asian girls...i know that i am a good friend and not a bad person...inshallah i will get a good life partner in 2 to 3 years time so i dont need lots of friends!!!

That's very true. There's a lot of people in this world who don't value true friendship. We should all strive to be the friends that are friends with Allah (swt).

Unfortunately, we all cannot be as lucky as some people in this world who are able to make friends easily! :-(

Well said, I can't agree more.
I feel so bad for the fact that now there are many people around us whom we consider friends but at the same time our relations are not that deep and they will never be, sometimes I feel that we collect friends as a hobby just like how some people collect coins or stamps without feeling something special about anyone of the persons we befriend with.
However, I still try hard to be more selective.
