Operation Failure: Manchester?
Manchester, Britain’s second city was in the media spotlight last week. The city I was born in and currently live in was currently the location for the biggest terrorist attack since 7/7. The so-called terror attack was foiled by police 24 hours before originally planned. Ten of those arrested are Pakistan-born nationals on student visas and one is a UK-born British national.
Currently the police are interviewing the suspects and the true motives for the arrests will be made public soon. Before everybody makes their opinions heard please consider the following points. If these people were truly involved in terrorist activity, then this not only puts the ‘Muslims’ in Manchester in the spotlight, but all British Muslims in the spotlight. Community relations will surely be strained. The same questions will still be asked- why are these people turning to extremism? How can we eradicate extremism? etc.I’m interested in hearing your replies to these important questions!
The other point of consideration is that if these people are innocent, then the issue of human rights comes in to focus. It would make me feel uncomfortable as a Muslim living in Manchester. The personal and social lives of these individuals could have been ruined. If you have a picture of the Trafford centre or Arndale centre on your walls it doesn’t make you a Terrorist. You can’t help being slightly sceptical about the latest ‘major’ terrorism raids in the North West. The last ‘major’ (they’re always ‘major’ these raids) was to pick up some lads from Blackburn and Burnley on their way to join the Viva Palestina convoy who in the end were totally innocent. We live in a time where we make opinions without really thinking about the situation in front of us.
So in conclusion, we can read and study and form opinions on last week’s arrests, but until we truly think about the above points we should reserve our opinions. The investigation in to this matter and its findings will really prove interesting when revealed.

the key of survival is the sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him.
even though, it's not right.
What impact/consequences do you think this has on Muslims living in Britain?
Please share your views.
Due to these misguided 'so called' Muslims who are acting upon Jihad, Muslims are already given a 'bad' name and people automatically form a prejudice , un-informed opinion and pre-concevied thoughts and opinions of Muslims without the full story or with a lack of knowledge and understanding about our faith. Time and time again, people (non-Muslims) will ask me questions like, 'If God is so great, then why is he making these Muslims kill innocent lives?' But they seem to forget that even though Allah(swt) has already written our destiny, we also have free will, so in fact these people led themselves to the wrong interpretation of the Quran and are not obeying Allah's commands but have unfortunately been misguided by their 'school of thought'.
Another time, I was asked, 'How can killing people in the name of God get you into heaven?' Once again, lack of knowledge and maybe the media have led people to believe that Muslims can earn their place in paradise by dying as a martyr. This is of course true in Islam but...all for the right reasons such as: holy war, not just randomly blowing yourself up and claiming that you are striving and struggling for your religion, when in fact, you leave your family, friends and community destroyed.
A small percentage of Muslims who are from the extreme, radical and violent wing of Islamic Fundamentalism, and who are deeply passionate and religious and anti-Western. might dwell on passages or verses dealing with conflict, war, and resistance to oppression but these are often the people who have read this one verse that tells them to 'fight against those who fight you', and obviously not studied the whole Quran or verse and have misinterpreted these words, sadly.
As for, how can we eradicate extremism?
I actually dont think it is physically possible, because if we were to punish or kill these jihad groups, extremists or terrorists it would simply set off more extremism in reaction to the punishment of those found. In reality, all we can do, as passive and minor as it may sound is to hate it in our heart, and of course pray (the obvious one!) and spread awareness and educate more people about the true meaning of Islam, like this blog, showing non-muslims that we are ordinary people, and not all Muslims have extremist views. We need to banish these prejudice, pre-conceived opinions of Muslims, together and gradually build a decent reputation up for ourselves, for our religion.
I accept that extremism is a problem for Muslims in this time a problem which needs to be addressed and eradicated from society however I also have problems with the media bias against Muslims which only fuels the problem sometimes particularly when 'moral panics' are created in cases like this.....
