Operation Failure: Manchester?

Manchester, Britain’s second city was in the media spotlight last week. The city I was born in and currently live in was currently the location for the biggest terrorist attack since 7/7. The so-called terror attack was foiled by police 24 hours before originally planned. Ten of those arrested are Pakistan-born nationals on student visas and one is a UK-born British national.

Currently the police are interviewing the suspects and the true motives for the arrests will be made public soon. Before everybody makes their opinions heard please consider the following points. If these people were truly involved in terrorist activity, then this not only puts the ‘Muslims’ in Manchester in the spotlight, but all British Muslims in the spotlight. Community relations will surely be strained. The same questions will still be asked- why are these people turning to extremism? How can we eradicate extremism? etc.I’m interested in hearing your replies to these important questions!

The other point of consideration is that if these people are innocent, then the issue of human rights comes in to focus. It would make me feel uncomfortable as a Muslim living in Manchester. The personal and social lives of these individuals could have been ruined. If you have a picture of the Trafford centre or Arndale centre on your walls it doesn’t make you a Terrorist. You can’t help being slightly sceptical about the latest ‘major’ terrorism raids in the North West. The last ‘major’ (they’re always ‘major’ these raids) was to pick up some lads from Blackburn and Burnley on their way to join the Viva Palestina convoy who in the end were totally innocent. We live in a time where we make opinions without really thinking about the situation in front of us.

So in conclusion, we can read and study and form opinions on last week’s arrests, but until we truly think about the above points we should reserve our opinions. The investigation in to this matter and its findings will really prove interesting when revealed.

surely this is a hard time for muslims, socialy as financially, but at times like these we should be greatful to live in such a developed and wealthy society where we have tools for every single object, good schools for our kids to go to, etc. Forget about people misjudging us by calling us terrorists. We muslims should take our problem within our own circle, muslims who mislead muslims and train them up to be a lozer. We've got something the christians not have; thats a clear source of information, where it came from, who it was passed on by etc.

the key of survival is the sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him.

The 11 people who were questioned were released without charge. 10 of them now face deportation from the U.K. The home office are currently deciding what to do.

What impact/consequences do you think this has on Muslims living in Britain?

    Please share your views.

What impact does it have on us, as Muslims living in the U.K?

Due to these misguided 'so called' Muslims who are acting upon Jihad, Muslims are already given a 'bad' name and people automatically form a prejudice , un-informed opinion and pre-concevied thoughts and opinions of Muslims without the full story or with a lack of knowledge and understanding about our faith. Time and time again, people (non-Muslims) will ask me questions like, 'If God is so great, then why is he making these Muslims kill innocent lives?' But they seem to forget that even though Allah(swt) has already written our destiny, we also have free will, so in fact these people led themselves to the wrong interpretation of the Quran and are not obeying Allah's commands but have unfortunately been misguided by their 'school of thought'.

Another time, I was asked, 'How can killing people in the name of God get you into heaven?' Once again, lack of knowledge and maybe the media have led people to believe that Muslims can earn their place in paradise by dying as a martyr. This is of course true in Islam but...all for the right reasons such as: holy war, not just randomly blowing yourself up and claiming that you are striving and struggling for your religion, when in fact, you leave your family, friends and community destroyed.

A small percentage of Muslims who are from the extreme, radical and violent wing of Islamic Fundamentalism, and who are deeply passionate and religious and anti-Western. might dwell on passages or verses dealing with conflict, war, and resistance to oppression but these are often the people who have read this one verse that tells them to 'fight against those who fight you', and obviously not studied the whole Quran or verse and have misinterpreted these words, sadly.

As for, how can we eradicate extremism?

I actually dont think it is physically possible, because if we were to punish or kill these jihad groups, extremists or terrorists it would simply set off more extremism in reaction to the punishment of those found. In reality, all we can do, as passive and minor as it may sound is to hate it in our heart, and of course pray (the obvious one!) and spread awareness and educate more people about the true meaning of Islam, like this blog, showing non-muslims that we are ordinary people, and not all Muslims have extremist views. We need to banish these prejudice, pre-conceived opinions of Muslims, together and gradually build a decent reputation up for ourselves, for our religion.

Very nice article brother Zaigham. I think one thing that many people are forgetting though is that these men were released without charge the police could not find significant evidnce which linked them to terrorist activity, I think it is therefore a shame to start accusing people before anything has been proven. I just cannot help but think that it was all a form of propoganda aimed at reigniting the 'fear' of terrorism in the nation. I believe this for many reasons from the initial leaking of this 'private' document to the masses to its coverage on the news which portrayed the event as 'major' before anything had even been found. To the aftermah where these guys have now been released without charge and are being deported- why should they be deported they have not been charged with anything? by deporting I believe it still sends out a message that these men 'may be a threat.' This goes back to what brother Zhaigham said about people's personal and social lives being ruined through things like this.

I accept that extremism is a problem for Muslims in this time a problem which needs to be addressed and eradicated from society however I also have problems with the media bias against Muslims which only fuels the problem sometimes particularly when 'moral panics' are created in cases like this.....

Very true Somia, but the media are always going to bias towards Muslims don't you think? it's their job to find a news story, which is why we have to make people see past how the media portrays Muslims to be.
