If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit.

In the deep moral abyss of the ‘expenses scandal’, the nation mourns the falling from grace of those posh-nosh-munching loveable rogues. Ooh don’t you just want to ruffle their flouncy hair, those cheeky munchkins. Stealing our money, all the while laden with rhetoric with a reassuring nod and smile, hands outreached for our votes- our trust- our pockets.

The question is, do you blame them? ...

It’s easy to lay claim to being the most trusting of characters, but how shocking was the discovery that, if you’re given the right to claim expenses, you’ll warp your thinking to justify the inclusion of the cost of petunias (life's no bed of roses, petunias get you through the hard times) and getting rid of dry rot (anyone else find an amusing metaphor for politics in there..?).

Until that is, you’re caught with your hands in the cookie jar. Terribly embarrassing stuff but get away with it once and a voice within convinces you- this was MADE for you. Be good to yourself. Live a little! Go for the bourbons- maybe even the choccy hobnobs. Exaggerating expenses is too easy, giving little thought as to where this invisible money comes from. And let’s be honest with ourselves: we are all deeply flawed masters of disguising our procrastination with paper shuffling.

Throughout the unravelling of this latest media frenzy, I’ve been reflecting on the finer nuances between ‘us’ and ‘them’. And well...they appear very fine indeed. It may well be the difference between rounding up and adding on some zeros- but is it not the same principle?

Life seems to be a matter of how much we can get away with- or how little.

We live in a compensation society where living goes beyond survival and it’s acceptable to strive to maintain ‘a lifestyle’. Petunias and all. I’m sure most of the politician-brigade didn’t set out to ‘steal’, it’s just expenses…well it’s a perk of the job surely, an entitlement, a pat on the back?

The ego has a good way of convincing us to submit, a weakness we’re all susceptible to. You start off with good intentions and then set new ones when the old ones lie dormant and forgotten in a thick layer of dust.

So today readers, trust no one- least of all yourself. And as for that ego, wage your war. Catch it, bin it, kill it.

Nice article!!:-) It's all so true but claiming a 5p plastic bag is just pushing it, don't you think? I mean, they must have know they were doing something not quite right at the time and they were going to be found out sometime or another...

MP's claiming 5p plastic bags??!! Oh my God, this is getting ridiculous isn't it Hafsah?

We should be able to trust MP's, they are supposed to be representatives for the people, they shouldn't be stealing from the people!!!

S.Kanno, Love your article, it seems if you were an MP, you would only claim Petunia expenses.

trust no one?? in the words of Jesus himself 'Love your neighbour'as a human race we should all show love for one another this is agape unconditional love it can be any type of love but no one should hate for this is wrong.
If one does not trust a politician then where will one be they are everywhere we can not ban them all.. or can we?? that is the question.

talking of biscuits the prices have certainly gone up of many products on the shelves is thtat due to mps?

Yes Jesus taught agape but that means we should show our understanding to the MP's and forgive them, let them pay back the damage they caused and the powers they abused and move on...

I think most human beings would fall in to the temptation of what they did but we need to learn from this because they obviously thought that no one was watching therefore no one would ever find out but of course, we are being watched constantly so this is no excuse!

As for the prices of choclate biscuits...two words...credit crunch... and two more words...greedy governments :-)

but Hafsah how can mps pay us back exactly? prices of biscuits gone up along with others they just get more money what will happen if we had no mps this is what i have wondered for many years of my life now.
yes indeed we are being watched, but how many people actually think about that before acting upon anything things just happen.
Kanno apology accepted :-D yes it is true people get let down but everything happens for a reason.

Well...they can't literally pay 'us' back but Alistair Darling said all the money he abused he is going to give back...like the money he spent on his daughters house...tut tut

Hmmm...no mp's...maybe we would have to pay less tax...and our money wouldn't be stolen by greedy people

Big Brother---perfect example...any decent person in the big brother house would think twice before doing something out of order because they are being watched...well I would anyway! The Big Brother House is basically the world we live in, because we are being watched 24/7 so we shouldn't even need to think 'oh no I'm being watched'...we should try and stop that temptation of doing something wrong before the idea even comes to mind.

Yeh I agree...everything happens for a reason...it's good the mp's got found out, now we know not to trust them until they show they can be trusted again!

And sorry for the essay but you did ask a lot of questions ;-)

all the money allistor 'darling' abused he will not give us back hes just saying this so people vote for the party he is from how can he possibly give us the money back?? put a fiver in everyones bank accounts i think not.

big brother is a good example but the difference is there are cameras all over that house and in normal homes which we live in there are not cameras everywhere unless one is a undercover spy :-D so one wouldnt really think about actions if it involves money people do anything for money these days which is pathetic really money isnt everything

as for votes day 2mro i dont think anyone should be voted for i for one shall put a cross on my paper.
    2009-06-04 01:01

  11. Hafsah
I didn't literally mean cameras in the real world...I meant we're being watched all the time by 1 person...Allah (swt)which is what people seem to forget and always think that when no one's watching it's the perfect time to steal that money or cheat in that test when they forget that you can't escape being watched...

as for the votes...im trying to convince my parents to vote for hope not hate lib dem so that bnp don't win in the local votes...they said they'll support the building of the local mosque and they have fair policies for all really!

    sounds good to me
    2009-06-04 03:35

  12. Kanno
Sorry by 'trust no one' I wasn't referring to some sort of negative hating mindset. I think we've all been let down people, and in turn, let other people down (in some minute way at least).

I just mean that the battle is within ourselves, it's easy to convince yourself that what you're doing is right, or if not right, at least 'OK'..'forgivable'..'could be worse?!'

We're all human, we all make mistakes. Some of us just make more expensive mistakes.
