If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit.
In the deep moral abyss of the ‘expenses scandal’, the nation mourns the falling from grace of those posh-nosh-munching loveable rogues. Ooh don’t you just want to ruffle their flouncy hair, those cheeky munchkins. Stealing our money, all the while laden with rhetoric with a reassuring nod and smile, hands outreached for our votes- our trust- our pockets.
The question is, do you blame them? ...It’s easy to lay claim to being the most trusting of characters, but how shocking was the discovery that, if you’re given the right to claim expenses, you’ll warp your thinking to justify the inclusion of the cost of petunias (life's no bed of roses, petunias get you through the hard times) and getting rid of dry rot (anyone else find an amusing metaphor for politics in there..?).
Until that is, you’re caught with your hands in the cookie jar. Terribly embarrassing stuff but get away with it once and a voice within convinces you- this was MADE for you. Be good to yourself. Live a little! Go for the bourbons- maybe even the choccy hobnobs. Exaggerating expenses is too easy, giving little thought as to where this invisible money comes from. And let’s be honest with ourselves: we are all deeply flawed masters of disguising our procrastination with paper shuffling.Throughout the unravelling of this latest media frenzy, I’ve been reflecting on the finer nuances between ‘us’ and ‘them’. And well...they appear very fine indeed. It may well be the difference between rounding up and adding on some zeros- but is it not the same principle?
Life seems to be a matter of how much we can get away with- or how little. We live in a compensation society where living goes beyond survival and it’s acceptable to strive to maintain ‘a lifestyle’. Petunias and all. I’m sure most of the politician-brigade didn’t set out to ‘steal’, it’s just expenses…well it’s a perk of the job surely, an entitlement, a pat on the back?
The ego has a good way of convincing us to submit, a weakness we’re all susceptible to. You start off with good intentions and then set new ones when the old ones lie dormant and forgotten in a thick layer of dust.So today readers, trust no one- least of all yourself. And as for that ego, wage your war. Catch it, bin it, kill it.

We should be able to trust MP's, they are supposed to be representatives for the people, they shouldn't be stealing from the people!!!
S.Kanno, Love your article, it seems if you were an MP, you would only claim Petunia expenses.
From the state of my garden, I should definitely be an MP, I'm in dire need of a gardener.
If i were an MP I would pay for a thing, hmmm...how hard is it to become an MP?
If one does not trust a politician then where will one be they are everywhere we can not ban them all.. or can we?? that is the question.
talking of biscuits the prices have certainly gone up of many products on the shelves is thtat due to mps?
I think most human beings would fall in to the temptation of what they did but we need to learn from this because they obviously thought that no one was watching therefore no one would ever find out but of course, we are being watched constantly so this is no excuse!
As for the prices of choclate biscuits...two words...credit crunch... and two more words...greedy governments
yes indeed we are being watched, but how many people actually think about that before acting upon anything things just happen.
Kanno apology accepted
Hmmm...no mp's...maybe we would have to pay less tax...and our money wouldn't be stolen by greedy people
Big Brother---perfect example...any decent person in the big brother house would think twice before doing something out of order because they are being watched...well I would anyway! The Big Brother House is basically the world we live in, because we are being watched 24/7 so we shouldn't even need to think 'oh no I'm being watched'...we should try and stop that temptation of doing something wrong before the idea even comes to mind.
Yeh I agree...everything happens for a reason...it's good the mp's got found out, now we know not to trust them until they show they can be trusted again!
And sorry for the essay but you did ask a lot of questions
big brother is a good example but the difference is there are cameras all over that house and in normal homes which we live in there are not cameras everywhere unless one is a undercover spy
as for votes day 2mro i dont think anyone should be voted for i for one shall put a cross on my paper.
as for the votes...im trying to convince my parents to vote for hope not hate lib dem so that bnp don't win in the local votes...they said they'll support the building of the local mosque and they have fair policies for all really!
sounds good to me
I just mean that the battle is within ourselves, it's easy to convince yourself that what you're doing is right, or if not right, at least 'OK'..'forgivable'..'could be worse?!'
We're all human, we all make mistakes. Some of us just make more expensive mistakes.
