Time. Our only real possesion?

The recent death of The King of Pop, Michael Jackson sent shock-waves across the globe. The fifty year old star collapsed and later died in his LA home on the 25th of June 2009.

Death is a reality, a fact of life, something we will all experience and is in fact the only thing we can be sure will happen.

It would be interesting for the readers to perhaps share how they felt about the death of Michael Jackson. I guess for me I didn’t have much of an emotional reaction to his death, however his passing perhaps reiterated in many of us the ‘inevitability’ of death, which was something that appeared to underlay many comments I heard such as ‘even Jackson couldn’t escape death...’   I guess for me his passing and indeed the death of anyone signifies the fragility of life in that it can end so suddenly but also that life is short and that what is important is to make the most of the time that we have.

Many may be thinking why there is something being written on death..? And for some this may even seem a bit morbid! However, I guess the purpose of this piece is not to create an atmosphere or a sense of morbidity, but really just a reminder that we should enjoy and make the most of our lives. Benjamin Franklin once said:  “Dost thou love life? Then waste not time; for time is the stuff that life is made of”. In other words, time is a resource and an asset and how we spend our time and our days is how we spent our lives.

As I leave you with some more sayings on time, have a little think about it and please share how you make the most of your time…

Sayings on time:

“There is never enough time to do everything, but there is always enough time to do the most important thing”. (Brian Tracy)

“You can't turn back the clock. But you can wind it up again”. (Bonnie Prudden)

“Watches are so named as a reminder - if you don't watch carefully what you do with your time, it will slip away from you”. (Drew Sirtors)

“All that really belongs to us is time.  Even he who has nothing else has that". (Baltasar Gracian)

Nice article, its so true that we should be careful and use the God given Gift of time wisely.

I think I was the same as you in regards my reaction to MJ's death, I was indifferent, I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of his, although the Dance moves he did were sick.

Dude, I loved some of Jacko's tracks (I say 'loved' in the past tense. In the present I convince myself I no longer like it). I watched Moonwalker loads when I was a kid - I subscribed to the motto: "Don’t stop till you get enough...". He was surely possessed by a daemon when he started dancing, some of his moves are impossible - believe me I tried them. My signature celebration after a strike in ten pin bowling is a MJ dance move.

Some of his tracks are bad for you though, believe...if you are praying salat and somebody somewhere in the background puts on thriller there is a risk that you will start dancing in your salat. Tawbah Tawbah!

Did I shed a tear at his death? - No, I wont be mising him - I have my own death to look forward to. It's just a shame that people just never left him alone, especially the media. His life is a perfect example of material wealth, success and fame not providing happiness but more misery and despair. His misguided approach to seeking happiness and no guide lead to him being self-destructive.

MJ was a wonderful man I always looked forward to meet. Unfortunately that won't happen in this world...
MJ by nature is a lovely man, but as you get pressurized by the press and people around you, you can get convinced to do stupid things. And again, unfortunately that happened.
A start since he was 5? He was just a perfect singer.
As a black man, he was liked by whites. And always one of my favourite ones are:

'Michael’s very public death notice is a powerful reminder that no matter how famous or talented or wealthy one is, death comes knocking, sometimes sooner than later. Michael has now entered a world of extraordinary perception, a world that makes his “Thriller” video seem mundane...'

Yeah, it's really sad that he died. It's a big shocker not only to the US, but the whole world. I know my parents use to listen to him back in the days.

I hope his soul rests in peace and that Allah (SWT) forgives him for anything he's done.

He appeared to be a tortured soul, who is perhaps better at rest now.
I thought the article was a great reminder of the infinite value of time, which should be prized above material wealth or success.

I was so shocked when I heard the news...At first I didnt beleive it but then after 5 minutes of watching the news it hit me...it shows how we take life for granted.
I was a huge fan of his and I still am it just annoys me how everyone suddenly likes him and that they didn't appreciate him when he was alive.
What he did other than music had nothing to do with his talent so that shouldn't have mattered to people...I'm still shocked!

Far better than any quote, and the most accurate description of the concept of 'Time' is Surah Al -Asr.

I agree! Surah Al Asr is the best description/reminder of time....

    Surah Al Asr

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),
Verily Man is in loss, Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.

    1. By the passing time (whose rotation bears witness to the affairs of mankind).
(Or: By the Prayer of declining day (‘Asr, for this Prayer is the middle of all Prayers).
(Or: By the declining time of the day, (when the sun, after shining for the whole day presents the sight of its setting).
(Or: By the holy era of Prophethood of Muhammad Mustafa (blessings and peace be upon him), the sole objective and the most coveted achievement of all ages historic as well as pre-historic, and of all times to come.
