About MuslimsInEngland.com
When you think of Muslims in the media, you automatically think about violent protests, effigies being burnt, embassies being torched and other horrendous acts of violence. The Muslims who get noticed in the U.K. media, and those who get front page news are loud mouthed Mulla's with scruffy beards, wearing some kind of foreign garments, they are normally condemning one thing or another, declaring holy war on something, claiming that the U.K. System is corrupt and everyone is going to hell, all the while claiming benefits from the state. The average U.K. citizen couldn't be to blame if he felt all ordinary everyday Muslims, including his neighbours were cut from the same cloth.
In the post 9/11 world, Muslims and their religion, Islam, has constantly been under close scrutiny in the media, whether it be front page on tabloids, or on the analytical sections of broadsheets, whether it be because a Muslims has killed a Dutch film maker, or because a suicide bomber has killed yet more innocent people.
Where did this reactionary model come from? In times long ago, when empires were in charge of affairs, a time when if a leader wanted control over your territory, all he had to do was send in his troops, when there was no need for creating illusions of weapons of mass destruction and war on terror. When the Mongol empire reigned supreme, or when the Roman empire was at its peak, maybe that was a time when the only way to make your voice heard was to shout the loudest, or torch building, or throw shoes at world leaders. But we now live in a modern world, a world in which we have the internet, with resources as rich as YouTube, and the ability to create a professional websites from the comforts of your own couch. So our means to make our voice heard should also be modern.
Through all this barbaric behaviour, the voice of Muslim sanity hardly manages to reach the average British person. When, on rare occasions it does, the person is sat around explaining the etymology of the word “Islam” and how it is derived from the word meaning “peace”. But do you ever get to hear the voice, the opinion of the ordinary Muslim person? Did you know the violent, loud mouthed Muslims are in a huge Minority? The average every day Muslim who are in a vast majority are very peaceful, and very diverse, they have no intentions to take over the world. Some Muslims are politically aware, yet others couldn't pick out Gordon Brown from a crowd of Sunday morning bingo go-ers. Some are Medical Doctors, some are engineers, some are teachers, and some are students. Their hobbies differ, some like football, others prefer cricket, some watch 'Eastenders', others prefer 'Heroes', some love reading books, others prefer watching movies.
We may have names similar to Omar Bakri and Abu Hamza, but our views differ wildly. And it is for these reasons that this website has been created, we aim to show the diversity in the Muslim community. We are a group of Muslims who live in England, from dfferent walks of life. Read how normal Muslims in England live, and finally have the chance to make your own conclusions instead of accepting information from biased media sources.
